The new Tomb Raider game promises to be much better than the unbelievably rubbish Angel of Darkness apparently, which wouldn't TBH be too difficult. I only played it through because I thought I would get to fight a Nephilim at the end and I'm terrified of Nephilim. But no, no Nephilim. :hmph:
And they'd better remove the code that I cannot believe actually made her chest move *heaves* :cross eye

    BBC

I'm quite sure though that the reason the second film bombed was because the first one was every bit as awful as Angel of Darkness.

Min, who likes her first person puzzle solving games especially with a Fortean element. 8)

I only ever played the first and second ones on the PS, and they were both pretty cool. It sounds as if they went for a Resident Evil approach in Angel of Darkness, which is all a bit silly; perhaps more Silenty Hilly would have been better

Was it only because of the burgeoning uber-presence of Lara Croft that they decided to go experimental on our collective gaming asses? Whenever anything becomes popular they always try and make it snazzy and flashy and thus alienate the original fans.

Speaking of Silent Hill, what's that like nowadays? I only ever played the first one, but that was awesome. Especially the crying and screaming in the cellar of the hospital in the 'bad' universe... eek!

Hmm yes probably. They know that suckers like me will run out all excited and buy it. I'd better at least wait for some reviews of the new one. Then rush out all excited and buy it. ;)

I've not played Silent Hill, is it in a similar vein?

Silent Hill is the only -genuinely- scary game that I've ever played. There are about 4 of them now, but where better to start than the first one. It kind of switches between a free perspective and fixed perspective, but in a good way, as it's a very dark game and it makes it difficult to see what's coming next. The premise of the first one is sort of Fortean in nature I guess. You arrive in an empty town.. it's misty.. there are strange creatures.. and then you start shifting between dimensions. The thing that freaks you out are parts like when you arrive in the basement of the hospital and the dimensions shift. Suddenly, from an empty nondescript cellar, there's blood splashes everywhere, bloody handprints streaked across the wall, claw marks, and the distant sound of children laughing and then starting to scream. It's genuinely freaky!

Min like Fortean games (and freaky horror films) > Min like Silent Hill!

The thing is, it's not gory as such.. it's pretty much totally psychological in nature. Just play it.. you'll see...

I know that saying this will make me sound like a complete psude, but I think it went downhill after the first game. I loved the emphisis on puzzley platform action with ocasional shooty bits in the first one but I thought the second game was a bit to heavey on shooting.

Anyone who hasn't played resident evil 4 really should, it is a master peice, it's not scarey but there's a few bit's you'll jump at if you don't know whats coming next.

I wouldn't say it went downhill (you haven't seen "downhill" till you've seen Angel of Darkness ;) )as such but there was something just totally enjoyable about the first. [geek]I still play it every so often just to run through the scenery and listen to the music. [/geek]

Silent Hill sounds a bit like "Alone in the Dark a new Nightmare" which I really enjoyed. I even screamed out loud at one point. (but then I am a big wuss). I'm only into horror films if they are psychological so it could be good if you actually meant it about it not being too gory. ;) PS1 is it?

PS1 it is! Although you can get it on the PC as well I think. It really is a cracking game. Very Lovecraft in motion.. which I think is what you like! I think the ones after were on the PS2 and PC only, so don't get them by accident (like I did when the 2nd one came out - Well, Amazon DIDN'T make it clear!!).

Well I was very sensible and didn't rush out and buy it at all. So I haven't therefore been playing it all afternoon and can't confirm that it is in fact loads better than Angel of Crapness. Still a little over complicated in terms of play but playable at least! Right, now I'm not off to keep playing it...

Am i the only one who doesn't read tomb-raider as womb-raider without even thinking about it?

Either it's a porn title or my mate came up with it himself a while back and it's stuck in my head.

I notice from the posters that her shorts seem to have got shorter.

Is it not a thread title for stolen babies or something?
I haven't noticed but you do go through one level wearing an outfit that would make Jordan blush, I'm not sure that is a good thing!

Ocean's Thirteen? OMFG. Presumably, since the nembers in this series denote not just which film you're watching, but also the size of Ocean's team of loveable thieves, the film-makers have to recruit an extra big star for each movie in the franchise. It beggars belief, and is worryingly reminiscent of the "Rocky XXXVIII" poster in Airplane 2. Way off-topic. Sorry.

The first film I ever saw Angelina Jolie in was Girl Interrupted, and I thought she did a superb job with her role. But ever since then, she's been in one turkey after another, and her acting ability actually seems to be decreasing with each film.

And can I just say that Ocean's 12 made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I mean, people complain that David Lynch's films are incomprehensible, but Lost Highway is postively straightforward compared to Ocean's 12! That film is madder than a bag full of rabid squirrels!

With filming on the new Tomb Raider movie currently underway, it was only a matter of time before we got a first look at Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) in the iconic role of Lara Croft.

The first behind-the-scenes pics from Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug's (The Wave) Tomb Raider reboot have made their merry way online and now we have our first peek at the Academy Award-winning actress (for The Danish Girl) in action (I mean, like, literally -- she's doing some very physical stuff in those pics) — and in costume — as Lara Croft.

And naysayers be dammed, because she looks very Lara Croft-y. Check it out.

I was at the Irish Premiere last night.

Tomb Raider: A creation myth film for Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander), her father Richard (Dominic West) has been missing for seven years and Lara is reluctant to sign papers confirming hiss death and thereby claim her inheritance. She works as a bike courier confirming all of our prejudices about their dangerous behaviour on the roads and footpaths, she is also a kickboxer, not always winning. Her former guardian (Kristin Scott-Thomas) finally persuades her to sign but in her solicitor's (Derek Jacobi) office, she comes across a clue which sends her back to the family crypt without signing.

In the crypt she discovers her fathers secret workshop and a video of her dad which lets her know that he has gone in search of the island tomb of an ancient Japanese Queen whose touch resulted in death. In Hong Kong Lara locates the son (Daniel Wu) of the skipper who brought Richard to the secret island. Shipwrecked on the island they are captured by the villainous Vogel (Walter Goggins) who is working on behalf of the evil cabal Trinity (probably the Provost and fellows of Trinity College, Dublin) to locate the Queen's tomb and give them control over supernatural forces.

Alicia Vikander's slim athletic build is just right for the character she portrays: an ultra-fit young woman who is a skilled archer but not a super-hero. She swings through the air on hooks, lianas, escapes from a rusty wrecked plane with a parachute. After killing her first baddie and initial shock, she suffers no more qualms about letting those arrows sink home into human flesh. Daniel Wu is a sidekick but has his own agenda to avenge his fathers death. Goggins is as evil as an SS camp guard as he shoots a slave-worker who is too ill to work.

There are underground passages, traps, puzzles to solve, collapsing floors, gasp to be bridged or jumped over. Even some original death dealing devices guard the inner reaches of the Queen's Tomb. This reboot of Lara Croft is based on the 2013 game and is a success. My only caveat is that it is unsophisticated in parts and this may have been due to desire to appeal to a young gamer audience. Still, welcome back Lara Croft. 8/10.
