There was a film about Campbell and his struggle with Alzheimer's where he was on his final tour. I decided against watching it because I thought it would be too sad, but apparently it's just as Escargot says, he would forget where the bathroom was in his own house, but could still sing and play his songs fine.

One of the greatest session guitarists ever, aside from his solo success. He's all over Pet Sounds. RIP.

    Really? Wow! Didn't know that.

I'll look out for that documentary and recommend it to people I know who work with dementia patients.

Heh, there was one old buffer who knew the words to EVERY song I played to him, from the 1940 to the '70s. He could hardly talk or feed himself but when the music played he was 25 again and up for a dance!

He was for a time a guitarist in the Wrecking Crew which was a bunch of session guys who played on just about everything in the 60s. The Phil Spector stuff such as River Deep Mountain High, Beach Boys as already mentioned, Frank Sinatra - Strangers In The Night era, Monkees, the list goes on..

There were some nice articles on the Guardian with more today. Someone on the radio said that he had to go into a residential home in his latter days as his wife couldn't look after him. He took his guitar with him, played for them & at at the end thanked them for coming.

My Nan did the same thing when she was in her residential home .. none of us even knew she could play the piano until the staff told us one day that she's been entertaining the other resident. :)

In one of the homes where I worked there was a lady who'd wander round quietly talking to her dog in a broad Scots accent. Now and then she would sit at a table and 'play' it like a piano. No doubt she could hear every note.
If there'd been a real piano there we could have heard it too.

Back to Hywel Bennett, I'd never even seen this video before and certainly didn't expect him to turn up miming Todd Rundgren's lines with Bonnie Tyler!
