Apparently Google Translate has begun spitting out ominous religious-sounding translations when certain nonsense is typed in for translation. Experts are blaming it's AI algorithms.:

No clue but I do remember when the Google translate first came on the scene people were finding amusement typing in a phrase, running it through a bunch of random translations, then bringing it back to English to see what was spat out. Could be mildly amusing an a kind of surreal fashion.

So if you listen to Black Lace's annoying and apparently nonsensical Summer hit of 1984 enough times, the lyrics will start to make sense?

So how long until someone gathers these nuggets of wisdom and founds the Church of the Google AI?

I've my friend has just discovered that if you start with:

    werwerwerwerwerwerewrwerwerwerwerwerwerwer

(translating from Catalan to English) you get:

    Read About Your Own Camera

if you keep adding 'wer' - one at a time - you'll get:

Give your television software a game of your own

Have your TV's about having your own phone system?

Have your TV's about having your own homeowner's own home theater system

Have your television set up with your own homeowners with your own homeowners

I posted about this curious mistransliteration effect here on FTMB back in May last year, in the GSOL thread
    (see http://forum.forteantimes.com/index...uff-online-thread.40345/page-135#post-1671021)

I still postulate that the inchoate ramblings we sometimes see vomited onto the forum (as bot spam) is being generated by something similar to this circular translation effect.

A lot of spam is simply badly machine translated.

That's what you might well say....but my smartphone app (a retinal Voight-Kampff test, with a USB-attached Taser) will detect skin-jobs that don't even realise that they're actually replicants :wear:

But you'll have nothing to fear...probably.

Odd. I've found a lot of websites offering pirated copies of my books and "people" commenting on them. It's clearly bots, presumably to make it look legit so real people will be sucked into whatever virus is attached to the downloadable file.
The bots talk in that weird, almost makes sense but not really, language.

The YouTube channel for Eastwood (welding equipment) does a lot of practical 'how to do' shows.

And it has what must be an automatic sub-title machine running along with the commentary from the tech.

    It often gives hilarious translations.

Yesterday, when the tech was warning about 'losing your rigidity' on a job, the text beneath referred to 'losing your virginity'.

AI has a long way to go.

And the great AI was turned on.
A representative of the people chosen for his/her (no one was really sure) asked it the first question.

'Is there such a thing as God'

    And the Great AI replied......

    'There is now'.

Ok, so it's an old one; bite me.

Google is smart. It took longer to type this than Google took to reply. Deep Thought took seven and a half million years.
