Good point well made...I don't know enough so shouldn't have been suggesting otherwise...I found this a very good read on this matter - https://www.comixtrip.fr/dossiers/charlie-hebdo/charlie-hebdo-racist-are-you-joking/

But then it doesn't take much of an internet search to find some examples of some pretty awful stuff they've printed.

Some of the cartoons even if they are intended as satire are way OTT.

They are, undoubtedly. But, a short peruse within a French newsagent, show that they have a different standard to UK publiciations for sure...way risque.

And presumably whats OTT is a subjective decision taking culture into account as well as many other things. But yeah - I've been shocked at things I've seen on French newstands...particularly comics containing a lot of racialised sexual violence as humour. Woah.

I remember looking for a gift for my little nephew in a French toy shop. They had a fancy dress costume section, which included a "Frère Jacob" costume of a Jew, featuring clip-on ringlets, little round glasses, a huge hooked false nose and a big wad of pretend money for "Jacob" to wave around.

Ha ha! Would probably have found it highly amusing, but had to make do with a toy car instead.

It’s already been pointed out on another site that this forum is totally Islamophobic.
The only way we’re going to get around this misunderstanding is by having a go at absolutely everybody.

I have a French-British acquaintance who explains that Hebdo’s humour is very French and doesn’t translate well to English (or indeed other languages). In fairness the writers and cartoonists were pretty much all on the Left and hardcore anti-racists. Humour often doesn’t cross borders and languages very successfully.

Rather than the racial and Islamic grotesques it was the Italian earthquake cartoon that nailed it for me - I'm happy to accept that some humour just doesn't travel well, but if that really was just lost in translation then I reckon I can live without the phrase book. (Actually, I have no problem with something being a bit sick - but only if there's some kind of point to it.)

I've bought precisely two Charlie Hébdos, but have read a few more extracts online.
I would place their humour as somewhere between Private Eye and Viz, but with far more scatological crudity thrown in.
It's not really politically left or right and remember France refers to les faschos de la gauche (left wing fascists) just to confuse matters. CH is predominantly anarchist, with a virulent hatred of organised religion. The pope often figures in their more extreme/obscene cartoons (but thankfully Catholics don't get quite as murderous as followers of another certain ideology).

Clearly it’s now time that offensive cartoons along with other satirical daubs be recorded as hate crimes.
Forget the actual real attrocities that see the repression, maiming and killing of real people. Make a stand against people drawing stuff. Because that’s where the real problems of the world lie.
Ban them all. Ban Mark Knight. Ban Steve Bell. Bury the Scarfe. Burn the Riddell.

But for fuck’s sake ban the CG caricature of Evan Davis for turning up on the BBC as the Meerkat off the Compare the Meerkat Newsnight ads. The subject’s too grim and he should stick to plugging two for ones on cinema tickets instead of hectoring politicians from the safety of his studio in his almost human-fitting tight suit.

And then what’s next eh? Posts eh?

The original “PC gone mad” thread focused on “banning baa baa black sheep” and similar urban legends.

But now here we have it for real:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/09/14/senior-officer-faces-action-saying-whiter-white/

Senior officer threatened with disciplinary action for using a phrase coined by Shakespeare but better known for its use in washing powder commercials. Nothing remotely racial about it.

But here we are in crazy Common Purpose world.

After all, it’s not like the Met has any other things to worry about is it ?!

I believe that is Steve Bannon. Remember him? He was one of Trumps' early campaign advisors who bit the dust reasonably early given his seniority. On the other hand, Mueller hasn't nabbed him on anything to date. Some people have said Steve is the slimiest of Trump's associates, but that doesn't seem fair to me given Manafort's crimes, both convicted and dodged. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bannon

Very well put. Yes. A lot of the Hebdo stuff appears to me horribly racist...and yet most of the contributors are pretty much far-left. It's different to what we're used to.

People in Britian that give a shit would do well to remember him...wonder where Johnson got the idea for the "burqa letterbox" comments? Wonder where Johnson got the idea for the "Chequers plan suicide vest" comments? Do they sound like the sort of comments Trump made as a candidate? Who has Johnson been having meetings for the last year or so?

Incidentally, and it gives me no pleasure to say it but when you look up "alcoholic" in the dictionary, there's this picure -

Twitter thread on the "OK" symbol being a symbol of white supremacy. This is complicated. My head hurts:
    https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1040778349172404224

It was a meme started on an image board to make people believe that the OK hand gesture represents 'white power'. Odd to see so many people believe it now. Was funny at first and now annoying.

Do your research. Documentaries on KKK, by KKK say it IS their symbol. They perverted the ok symbol by turning the back of the hand. Hold 3 fingers straighter to stand for W, forefinger and thumb touch to form bastardized p from ASL. W P

Let's say it started out a tasteless joke/meme, it's real now! The man next to the guy CLEARLY reacted to something around the time that the gesture was made. Life may be imitating art here, but even if it is STILL a tasteless joke, that serviceman KNEW what he was doing.

    What?
...and that concept is the only filament that's keeping this thread on the board. Once again, sodding politics is threatening to eclipse it. I did ask nicely a page or three ago - which may as well be 1785 to some - to stay away from it, but clearly I asked too nicely. I'm aware I can be over-benevolent.

Last time I'll mention it - enough of the politics. The whiter-than-white thing - fine. That's what we want. Stick to the road, don't go on t'moor, cos if you do I'll bite you and then close the thread, probably forever, and then you'll all complain, and I won't care.

I trust we all understand one another.

The 'ok' gesture thing and the ostentatious drinking of milk being a sign of fascism are now 'real' because the alt-right decided to make them real. I.E., some far-rightists on the internet decided to do that as kind of a joke to fuck with people, and they became real-life symbols of the far-right because the far-right were the ones doing those actions.

I'd never heard of it prior to the congressional hearings for the new supreme court judge (there were accusations that somebody in the background was making the sign).

Is this quite a new thing?
