I'm wondering if anybody knows of tales of "phantom places", like outdoor spaces, buildings, tunnels and streets that disappear and reappear or relocate, stations, natural places, and so on.

We often hear of ghost vehicles, beings, but not that often about places, and I'm quite intrigued by the subject...

    Welcome to the FTMB!

There are any number of threads pertaining to places that are the sites of weirdness (ghosts; poltergeists; etc.) or are characterized as 'mysterious' in and of themselves.

As far as threads specifically aligning with your stated interests, here's a quick sample gleaned from some cursory scanning:

    Phantom Islands

    phantom roman villas?

    http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/phantom-roman-villas.19787

    Places that don't exist

    http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/places-that-dont-exist.50968

A variety of threads on 'lost lands' (Atlantis, flooded kingdoms, etc.), such as:

    lost lands

    These Roads Lead Where....???

    http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/these-roads-lead-where.54598

Phantom carriageways? Extinct thread; posts merged into:
    Phantom hitchhikers or road ghosts

    http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/phantom-hitchhikers-or-road-ghosts.1632

It's anybody's guess how many more there are ...

The best advice I can offer is to search the site for threads that match your interests. The most effective way to search FTMB is to use Google and designate 'forteantimes.com' in the Site option. If you use the FTMB's resident Search facility, make a point to use the 'Advanced' (full) search entry rather than the drop-down 'quickie' search at the top of each page.

    Thanks! MY pleasure. gentlemen.

The thing is, many of those threads are about the known and referenced classic stories, copyright strategies, intentionally created fakes, renamed or removed places, or misc ghost vehicles.

I'm definitely more interested, and should specify that more in my OT, about what people here have heard growing up, where they live, where they've been - that's why I posted in the folklore forum and not elsewhere.

If somewhere any of you has personally run into a story of a phantom building, tunnel, cave, station, parking lot, house, etc. The topic about the roman villas is quite interesting, as I am roman myself, although that link is broken. Am combing the site for articles and the forum for threads, though. Was already on the phantom Islands stuff, although that topic is fairly unique.

    Thanks for the tips!

edit: Maybe it should be posted in the "it happened to me" forum then? No idea

I'm a transplant to the central FL area. While I grew up on the midatlantic among fields and unexpected forest paths, with decaying colonial buildings if you knew where to look, we didn't have many stories of weirdness. Here, though, there's Sarasota over southwest of Tampa. I knew a few people there and it's sort of settled among them that Sarasota is home of the weird. Roads that you never can quite find again, lights that do some funny things at night. Not much in the way of specifics, but they definitely consider it a liminal area.
