I've done it in the past, but life is too short.

And then I wonder whether I ought to correct their spelling and punctuation.

And then I wonder whether I ought to sort out their phrasing.

    And then I remember that I probably shouldn't re-write everybody's posts.

I've only ever edited spelling or punctuation in thread titles...

I'm sorry, but I cannot have, "Please help my angle fish" or "neon tetra's" on the front page, no, not happening :slapd:

There is something even worse, you know. Putting more than 3 dots at the end of a phrase, as if that somehow imparts more... something or other.

I've always used the ellipse to mean 'there is lots more I could add but it would be too long / I'm too lazy" As opposed to etc. meaning I've only given some instances of a long list. Apologies if I've got it wrong.

I was taught grammar at school and I do care about it, but a life programming computers tends to erode that sort of knowledge :-(

    Correct.

Ellipsis means "Falling short"--not saying all that you could.

Alas, it has suffered badly by turning up when all has already appeared.

In parenthesis, many common objects may be made the vehicles of retribution, and where retribution is not called for, of malice. Be careful how you handle the packet you pick up in the carriage-drive, particularly if it contains nail parings and hair. Do not, in any case, bring it into the house. It may not be alone... (Dots are believed by many writers of our day to be a good substitute for effective writing. They are certainly an easy one. Let us have a few more......)

    Great post!

I'm trying to recall which great author wrote of his absolute hatred of the semicolon.

Surely half a colon is better than no colon at all..Or is that a loaf.

reading death on the instalment plan in san fran in 1991 drilled the elipsis into me and ive not been able to extract those 3 little gettones since ... i find their use in direct speech and/or forums/emails endearing if used as per that text, it suggests trailing thoughts, related ideas, stream of consciousness, or a pause that isnt otherwise captured in punctuation

i hear spurious commas, are the next big thing

On another MB I have asked contributors to impose paragraphing on cut'n'paste posts (it's an OK practice there, sharing yarns) and it's done all the time now.

I almost went for 'Poo-tee-weet' but that would have been even more obscure. I'm a huge fan of Kurt Vonnegut and have read just about everything he wrote. I rarely visit this part of the forum but have started breaking my posts into small paragraphs as a result.

Please keep technical discussions off the discussion threads. If you think a thread is in the wrong place, a duplication of an existing topic, a violation of our guidelines or stupid, please post here, in WEBSITE ISSUES, not on the thread.

Also, if you want to request a merge, please don't post the comment on the discussion thread, post links to the two (or more) threads in the REORGANISATION thread.

I think we're pretty quick with these things, but when users go off on meta-discussions or post links that will likely become dead, it just means more cleaning up for us. If you 'tag' me in the REORGANISATION thread, it is very likely to be attended to within a few hours, often within a few minutes.

    Thanks.
