Wondering how this will affect the FTMB. In theory, we won't be able to post snippets of news articles, links or potentially copyrighted photos.

A committee of MEPs has voted to accept major changes to European copyright law, which experts say could change the nature of the internet.

They voted to approve the controversial Article 13, which critics warn could put an end to memes, remixes and other user-generated content.

Article 11, requiring online platforms to pay publishers a fee if they link to their news content, was also approved.

The European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs voted by 15 votes to 10 to adopt Article 13 and by 13 votes to 12 to adopt Article 11.

It will now go to the wider European Parliament to vote on in July.

It all depends on interpretations, there will be many law suits at a higher level, before anyone comes after the FTMB. FB, Twitter and Google will go to battle on this.

Also, it's not passed yet by the European Parliament. Lobby your MEP.

The UK Government hasn't opposed this so it would likely be assumed into UK Law after Brexit if they are allowed to get away with it.

    Fight It!

We have been aware of this potential irritation for a while now.

Until we say otherwise our guidance is to carry on regardless.

Although, in the circumstances and in consonance with Ramon, I might better advise:

If the EU's copyright innovations fail to acknowledge, much less accommodate, anything analogous to the 'fair use' provisions that were necessary to make American copyright laws practical / practicable, the changes will only accelerate the EU member states' ongoing slide toward relative irrelevance within the broader global context.

Hmm, and I thought those "you can't read this page because you are in the EEA" messages were bad enough...

Why, it's almost as if this legislation was drawn up by a bunch of old guys who've never read a comments section in their lives! Fair use is very much worth defending, imagine being fined for memes, to use an extreme example.

The first test cases will be those who have linked over to sites that actively encourage linking - eg most news sites. When the source site has given tacit agreement (and has been doing so for years) it'll be tricky to enforce. Also it'll be nigh impossible to enforce retroactively.

Still, as Yith said we'll cross that bridge if it ever hoves into view.
